The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons is a public institution that was established in 2003 to provide post-graduate medical training in medicine, surgery and related disciplines.
The passage of the law introducing itself, formally, to the Ghanaian public, and the world at large, with an inaugural ceremony chaired by President Kuffuor, and supported by a number of his cabinet and government officials, on wednesday 9th December 2003, at the Accra International Conference Center.
Some pomp was choreographed for the occasion. Instrumental music was provided by the Ghana Police Band, with joyous singing from the Winneba Youth Choir under the baton of Paa John Yamoah. With the choir singing Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus in the background, the highlight of the event was reached when President’s Kufuor’s aid-de camp marched briskly across the hall with the mace of the College held aloft, passed it on to his Excellency, who in turn, presented it to the College President, Professor Ofosu-Armaah. President Kufuor then unveiled the arms of the College, it was epoch-making experience.
An important part of the Inaugural Ceremony was the formal admission of four Honorary Fellows elected into the College. Article 26 of Act 635 establishing the College allows the College membership to include “Honorary Fellows who shall be professionals of high distinction as the College may decide to honour”.
